Estudiantes Back In The Liga Feminina With Win Over PIO XII

PIO XII started the semifinal game against rival Estudiantes with a great start scoring 14-6 late in the 1st period. Elisa Turek led in rebounds and easy shots under the basket with 12 points and 4 rebounds. PIO XII continued to demonstrate good shooting from the field following yesterdays game,67% from 2point and 40% from three point land. PIO XII closed the 1st period 21-13 while Estudiantes short run late in the 1st period.

Estudiantes started the second period with better shooting from the floor and was able to close the gap during the middle of the 2nd period against PIO XII. Maria Vilouta had to go out of the game due to a back injury during a rebound against Elisha Turek. Estudiantes could not find a way to stop Turek, who finished with 15 in the first half. At the end of the period PIO XII only edged Estudiantes by only two points (33-31) despite the good 1st period start.


The third period was a fight for all, both teams went on a 6-0 run in the 3rd period. PIO XII out rebounded Estudiantes 30-19 and was able to get to the free throw line and convert. Erika Gomez gave Estudiantes a big spark offensively inside the paint and Irene Casterjon from behind the arc.


In the final period, the pressure was on PIO XII at home while Estudiantes took control and gained the lead. Estudiantes scored consecutive shots and three's to get give them a 3 point advantage with 4 minutes remaining. The largest lead Estudiantes made was 8 points points, but PIO XII trimmed it down to 3 points with 1:18 remaining in the game. Estudiantes took a time out with 0:59 and came out with an offense which put them on the free throw line. Gomez made 1/2 and put Estudiantes up by 4 points. PIO XII could not make any baskets in the stretch and Estudiante prevailed by winning 71-67 with great shooting at the free throw line.
