France never looked back after scoring the first 8-points of the match and increased their advantage to 15-points at the end of the first period. France slowed down during the second period but went into the interval with a comfortable lead (50-24). Australia changed their defensive system after the break and France was not able to find their way to the basket and were forced into turning over the ball which profited Australia as they went on a 14-1 run to reduced their deficit. Jacques Comméres was forced into calling a timeout to stop the Australian advance. The timeout had little effect as France continued to turn the ball over and only managed to limit the damage from the free throw line as they went into the final period leading by 14- points.
