The Baylor Lady Bears are still unchallenged on top of The Associated Press Women’s College Basketball Rankings, while St. John’s re-entered the top 25 after an impressive showing last week. The Lady Bears defeated Oregon State, 78-45, last week and they suffered a scare against Texas Tech before escaping with a 56-51 win, which was still enough for them to get all the 40 first-place votes in the poll to remain on top for the 15th straight week.
St. John’s, on the other hand, barged into the rankings once again, 20th, after scoring a huge 57-56 upset win over formerly second-ranked Connecticut Huskies, a win that ended the 99-game home winning streak of UConn.
The Red Storm also ended the Huskies’ 261-game home winning streak against non-ranked opponents and was also the first win by coach Barnes Arico in 10 tries against the perennial contender.
“We definitely have enjoyed this one,” said Arico on their current success. “I told the kids in the locker room after the game that they will always remember this. Not many teams have won here.”
With the stunning defeat, the Huskies dropped to fourth, while Stanford and Notre Dame wound up second and third, respectively.
Miami (FL), Maryland, Duke, Ohio State, Delaware, and Tennessee complete this week’s top 10 teams in the rankings.
