The heat is back in Atlanta, with professional women's basketball heading to the city in 2008. Today, the WNBA announced that there will be a new franchise team for the 2008 season in Georgia. It has been 9 years since there was a women's professional team in Atlanta. During the short years of the ABL (American Basketball League), Atlanta Glory was the raving team for women's basketball enthusiast and players. The WNBA looked to bring basketball back to the Southeast due to the short lives of two WNBA teams, Charlotte Sting and Orlando Miracle. Although the attendance at the NBA's Atlanta Hawks has gone dramatically down since the days of Dominque Wilkson, WNBA president Orender is not concern due to the large fan base of the NCAA teams in the SEC Conference.
"We have a significant talent pool with the SEC and ACC, which are very strong conferences for men's and women's basketball," Borders said in May. "We would have this type of opportunity for women to leave college and go on and play in the Southeast in the WNBA."
