During one of the first possessions for Houston, Tina Thomas dived for the ball at court-side where she hit a chair and deeply cut her  left ring finger. Also, during the first period, starting point guard Shannon Johnson went to the lockerooom for a cut lip. With both veteran players out, Houston found themselves losing by high as 11 points in the first half. Becky Hammon, Ann Wauters and Sofia Young were high scorers for San Antonio.

As the second half started, Tina Thompson and Shannon Johnson returned to the game to establish a tone for Houston. With several lead changes and big buckets, Houston and San Antonio fought hard until the end during the last two minutes of regulation. A big three pointer by Mabika and Hammon put the game even to send the game into overtime. In overtime, there were several lead changes, however, veteran Tina Thompson received the ball with Ann Wauters defending her, and with a little space, Thompson spinned to the baseline to get a 15ft jumper that put Houston up by 1pt. In the final, seconds San Antonio last shot was taken by Johnson in the corner which didn't not touch anything.
