Senegal failed to qualify in the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup in Turkey but they will go home with their heads up after securing the bronze medal in the 23rd AfroBasket for Women.

After absorbing a painful 46-43 defeat against Angola in the semifinals, Senegal ended their campaign on a high note by scoring a hard-earned 56-53 victory over Cameroon in the bronze medal match in Maputo, Mozambique.

Astou Traore had an impressive performance as she finished with 14 points on 5-for-6 shooting from the field including a perfect 3-for-3 clip from beyond the arc, while also tallying four rebounds and three steals.

Mame Marie Sy also had a productive night with 13 points on 6-for-7 shooting to go along with six rebounds, while Oumoul Khairy Thiam added 11 points for Senegal, which held off several comeback attempts from Cameroon.

Senegal was in control in the first period that ended with them on top by four points and then they kept their level of play in the second period to take a five-point lead into the locker room for the half-time break.

Cameroon then played with a lot of sense of urgency in the second half and they pulled within two points heading into the final period, but Senegal leaned on their experience to escape with the victory.

Priscilla Mbiandja led Cameroon with 13 points to go along with six steals and three rebounds, while Amina Njonkou and Alina Nicole Senken added 11 points apiece, while also combining for 13 rebounds in a losing effort.
