Angel McCoughtry Helps Atlanta Dream Snatch Seventh Win In Eight Games

Angel McCoughtry had a rough night from the field but she managed to carry the Atlanta Dream to a thrilling 78-77 win over the Connecticut Sun on Sunday night at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Connecticut.

McCoughtry shot just 14-for-33 from the field, but her 33-point output was enough to lift the Dream to their seventh win in eight games this season. McCoughtry, who scored 24 of her 33 points in the first three quarters, set the new franchise record for most field-goal attempts in a game.

“She's a competitor. Angel is really going to compete hard wherever she plays anytime she plays on the floor. That is all I ask of her. I think she is a new person this year to really come out and play a lot of hard defense and be a passer at times. We needed a lot of her scoring, and she did that for us,” Dream coach Fred Williams said after the game.

Atlanta were comfortably ahead 73-59 with 6:37 left in the game, but the Sun unleashed a huge rally and took the 77-76 lead after Kelsey Griffin completed an and-one off a fouled put back.

Good thing for the Dream, McCoughtry converted a game-winning layup to help the Dream maintain solid grip on the top spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

“I should've played better defense when they were coming back, but we kind of needed this test because we haven't had many games like this. This is good for us. We needed a test like this. Mohegan Sun Arena is one of the toughest places to play,” said McCoughtry after the game.

Tina Charles led Connecticut with 19 points and 12 rebounds, while Kelsey Griffin and Kalana Greene added 16 and 14 points apiece, but it was not enough to lead their team to a victory as they dropped to 2-6 this season.
