Serbia Stuns Italy To Advance To EuroBasket Women 2013 Semis

Serbia continue to surprise the skeptics in the EuroBasket Women 2013 after booking as semifinals spot with a masterful 85-79 victory over Italy on Wednesday in Orchies, France.

The Serbians used a scintillating run down the stretch to erase a five-point deficit in the final 90 seconds of the match. Italy led by a point after the first three quarters and looked poise to running away with a close victory.

The Azzurre were on top 79-74 with less than two minutes left in the match, but Milica Dabovic knocked down a huge three-pointer to pull within two points. Dabovic’s three-pointer sparked a huge 11-0 rally in the final 1:34 of the match as Serbia escaped with the stunning come-from-behind victory.

“It is a historical win for us, I want to express our great happiness. Italy have a fantastic group of players, and my colleague is a very good and experienced coach. Today we wrote history, now some people will know in Serbia what is women's basketball. We are all sportswomen and have to prepare for the future,” said Serbia coach Marina Maljkovic.

Jelena Milovanovic led the balance attack of Serbia as she finished with 21 points and seven rebounds, while Milica Dabovic added 17 points and four boards. Jovana Rad chipped in 15 points and seven rebounds, while Tamara Radocaj posted 14 points for Serbia, who had nine more rebounds than Italy.

“I am really happy right now; we also played putting our heart on the court and with a very good defence at the end of the game. I cannot explain how I feel,” said Milovanovic after the game.

Giorgia Sottana, on the other hand, finished with 22 points, while Raffaella Masciadri and Kathrin Ress finished with 11 and 10 points, respectively, for Italy, but it was not enough to give their team the victory.
