Spain Arranges EuroBasket Women 2013 Semis Duel With Serbia

Spain almost blew a huge lead but they managed to hold on to a 75-58 victory over Czech Republic to arrange a semifinals showdown with Serbia in the ongoing EuroBasket Women 2013 in France.

Spain jumped on the gun in the opening period and built as much as 17 points behind the hot shooting of Alba Torrens. However, the Czechs managed to trim the lead down to 10 points heading into the second period and then tied the game at 41 early in the third period.

With their perfect record and a semifinals slot on the line, Spain regrouped quickly and unleashed a 10-2 rally to wrestle control of the game once again. They never looked back and dominated further in the final period en route to the huge victory.

“We started really good but we fell in their trap, we lost control of the tempo, and we played slower like they wanted us to play. After the first 25 minutes we could improve our game because we had not many turnovers. We are very happy because our goal before starting the tournament was qualifying for the World Cup and now we are in the semi-finals,” said Spain coach Lucas Mondelo.

Torrens was on fire on Wednesday night as she erupted for 29 points and 11-for-19 shooting from the field, while Sancho Lyttle added 23 points and 12 rebounds to go along with five steals.

“Sancho and Alba both had big games for us and this is important, because we have had a good tournament so far and we want to continue in this way,” said veteran Amaya Valdemoro, who added 11 points and four rebounds for Spain.

With the win, the undefeated Spain earned the right to face Serbia in the EuroBasket Women 2013 semifinals on Friday in Orchies, France. Serbia earned a spot in the semis after escaping with an 85-79 win over Italy.
