Spain Will Look To Upset Host France In EuroBasket Women 2013 Finals

Host France will go all out to win the title in front of their home-town fans, but Spain are expected to give them a run for their money when they collide in the EuroBasket Women 2013 Finals today in Orchies.
Spain earned a spot in the finals after posting an emphatic 88-69 victory over Serbia in their semifinal encounter on Friday, successfully protecting their unbeaten record.
Sancho Lyttle continues to dominate like she was doing in their previous games as she posted 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Cristina Ouvina provided a huge lift, finishing with 19 points and four assists. Marta Xargay contributed 13 points, while Spanish hotshot Alba Torrens posted 11 points and four rebounds.
Although they will be playing in front of a hostile crowd in the finals, Spanish head Lucas Mondelo had strong words when asked about their chances against the host country.
“My philosophy is to only be worried about my own team and to do the right things. If you don’t do your own things well, then it doesn’t matter who is in front of you – you will lose the game. In our Federation, the most important thing is taking care of our players to make sure they feel confident and have the confidence of the coaches coming into games,” Mondelo said.
Meanwhile, losing will not be an option for France, who set a date with Spain in today’s finals via a hard-earned 57-49 win over Turkey in the semifinals.
The host country had a strong start, building a 22-11 lead at the end of the first period. Turkey had several comeback attempts, but were successfully foiled by the French squad.
Emilie Gomes led the balance attack of France with 11 points and three assists, while Endene Miyem posted 10 points and nine rebounds for the host country.
Playing in front of their hometown fans will provide a huge morale booster for France, but it will also be an added pressure. However, France coach Pierre Vincent is confident that his team will respond to the challenge.
“I expect to win. I tried to explain to the players that played really well last summer. This is another year – we want to win for sure. I expect we will be at our maximum, passionate, strong and that we will stay together. Then we will see what happens,” Vincent said.
