Halcon Avenida Beats Ros Casares to Arrange Duel with SpartaK

Halcon Avenida really had Ros Casares’ numbers’ this year as they hammered out an impressive 61-49 win over their Spanish rival in their EuroLeague Women Final Four showdown on Friday in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

Avenida, who defeated Ros Casares in all of their last four meetings, arrange a rematch of the 2009 Finals with the Sparta&K Vidnoje, who earlier dispatched the host team, UMMC Ekaterinburg, 54-43, in their own Semifinals clash.

Taking advantage on Ros Casares’ crippled frontline, Sancho Lyttle was nearly unstoppable inside, scoring 17 points to go with 11 rebounds, while Spanish star Alba Torrens added 12 points and five rebounds for Avenida, who mounted a huge third quarter attack to control the fourth and final quarter.

“I think the result was foreseeable,” said Halcon Avenida coach Lucas Mondelo. “The key for us was fixing the problem and trying to solve it. We played aggressively, in the first half we suffered from pick-and-rolls, but in the second, we controlled the offensive rebounds.”

Trailing by solitary points at the half, 29-28, Halcon Avenida came out firing in the third period, outscoring their Spanish counterpart, 18-10, and never looked back in the final period to escape with a huge win to have the chance of avenging their finals defeat last year.

Erika DeSouza also had a productive night, ending up with eight points and 11 rebounds, while Anke De Mondt also added eight points for Avenida.

“We came a little nervous, but then we got up steam, and worked as a really good team,” said De Mondt. “We know how to play. We are really a big team, and we are ready for the Final. In the second half our fans helped us a lot.”

Katie Douglas and Rebekkah Brunson each had 15 points, while Jana Vesela added nine points and six boards, which were not enough to help Ros Casares reach this year’s EuroLeague Women Finals.

Sparta&K MR Vidnoje and Halcon Avenida will collide for the title on Sunday in Ekaterinburg.
