EuroLeague Women: Diana Taurasi Erupts in Season-Opener

After being involved in a false doping issue last year, Diana Taurasi made her return in the EuroLeague Women and she did it with a bang as she led her team to huge season-opening win.

Taurasi, who is fresh from her WNBA Playoff stint, erupted for 31 points to go with eight rebounds and six assists to lead Galatasaray to an impressive 83-66 win over VICI Aistes in Istanbul, Turkey.

Alba Torrens also had an explosive debut, finishing with 18 points, while Tina Charles added 12 points and four rebounds for Galatasaray, who were surprisingly outrebounded, 49-31, but the VICI Aistes.

“We are a new team, building chemistry,” said Galatasaray coach Ceyhun Yildizoglu. “Diana, of course everyone knows, is a great player not only in scoring, she can also play good defense, she's smart.”

Meanwhile, the defending EuroLeague Women champion Perfumerias Avenida also kicked off the season on a positive note as they subdued CCC Polkowice, 74-52, in Poland.

Dewanna Bonner was simply too much for the Polish club as she racked up 21 points and 13 rebounds, while Marta Fernandez added 18 points and six assists for Avenida, who turned a close game into a blowout in the final ten minutes of the game.

Ahead by just six points heading into the final period, the defending champs waxed hot and Polkowice could do nothing but watch Avenida pulled away from them with a 25-9 total domination in the fourth quarter.

“For three quarters we were equal rivals, In the fourth quarter we played poorly,” said CCC Polkowice coach Krzysztof Koziorowicz. “We ran out of power. It is a pity that we lost, but remember that we played with the EuroLeague Women champion, and for us it was the first match.”
