Rivas Ecopolis Stuns Galatasaray, Fenerbahce Stays Sharp

Galatasaray Medical Park and the mammoth crowd in Istanbul were stunned after Rivas Ecopolis scored a huge 75-68 upset loss on Wednesday.

Asjha Jones had a huge night as she racked up a double-double with her 19 points and 13 rebounds, while Elisa Aguilar added 16 points for Rivas, who came into the match as the overwhelming underdog.

“Both teams played really hard,” said Jones. “We controlled the tempo and started with a win.”

The two teams went toe-to-toe for the entire game, but Rivas looked like the sharper and more prepared squad as the controlled the pace. Galatasaray threatened to make a comeback down the stretch, but Rivas displayed tremendous composure to escape with the huge win.

“It was a great game for us,” Rivas coach Miguel Mendez said. “We played good all-around basketball with very good defense and won an important match against the home team.”

Diana Taurasi and Tina Charles paced Galatasaray with 21 points apiece, while Epifaniya Prints added 10 points and eight rebounds.

“They played hard on every possession and were relentless on the boards,” Charles said. “They definitely went after it, played collectively as a team. They seemed very disciplined and deserved to win.”

Meanwhile, the long break did not break Fenerbahce’s momentum as they remained undefeated after scoring a 74-58 win over Beretta-Famila Schio in the final eight match.

Ivana Matovic erupted for 25 points to go with five rebounds, while Penny Taylor added 24 points and six rebounds for Fenerbahce, who were in control for the entire match despite some flashy moments from their opponents.

“As we expected they played intelligent basketball,” said coach George Dikeoulakos. “I think our good defense was the key and from this good defense we found the energy to translate into offence.”

In the other matches in day one of the final eight, Sparta&K MR Vidnoje scored a come-from-behind 77-70 win over Wisla Can-Pack, while Ros Casares dominated UMMC Ekaterinburg to hammer out a 62-49 win.
