Fenerbahce Edge Galatasaray in Battle of Turkish Giants

The top-seeded Fenerbahce buckled down from a slow start to escape with a 75-67 win over rival Galatasaray in the battle of Turkish giants on Thursday night inside the jam-packed Abdi Ipekci arena in Istanbul.

Galatasaray looked sharper and were ahead by nine points at the half, but the undefeated Fenerbahce stormed back and unleashed a huge 18-4 run to start the second half, shifting the momentum on their side.

The Turkish powerhouse squads trade runs and went toe-to-toe, but Fenerbahce came out with tremendous composure down the stretch.

With the game tied at 63, Fenerbahce shifted to next gear and unleashed a 12-4 run to end the game, thus emerging on top of their heavyweight clash, despite losing Penny Taylor to a knee injury earlier in the game.

“I don't know what to say. When the game was finished, my mind was on Penny Taylor,” said Fenerbahce coach George Dikeoulakos. “I am very glad that we won. We always make a difference when we translate our good defense into offense with energy and fast breaks.”

Zane Tamane stepped up big time as she finished with 19 points and nine rebounds, Birsel Vardarli added 17 points and five rebounds, while Angel McCoughtry chipped in 16 points for Fenerbahce, who remained undefeated this season.

With the win, Fenerbahce set up a winner-take-all matchup against Rivas Ecopolis today with the winning squad advancing to the finals against Ros Casares, who has already booked a slot in the finals after clinching the top spot in Group B, while Fenerbahce bid goodbye to their title hopes this season.
