EuroLeague Women 2012-13 Season Kicks Off Today

The 2012-13 Season of the EuroLeague Women kicks off today with eight highly-anticipated matches featuring 16 teams who have retooled their lineup during the offseason.

Uniqa Euroleasing Sopron will open their 15th EuroLeague Women season against Arras Pays D’Artois, who will be making their debut in the most prestigious women’s basketball league in Europe.

While newcomers Arras are expected to have a rough ride this season, UE Sopron is poised to contend once again with the return of Jelena Milovanovic to form a deadly combo with Zsofia Fegyverneky, who led the squad in scoring and rebounding last season.

“It feels good to be back,” said Milovanovic, who played for Sparta&K last season. “I had my first EuroLeague Women steps here and had a couple of great seasons. This club really helped me improve my game and I think that after my injury, this was the best place for me and I am so happy to come back.”

Galatasaray and Sparta&K Moscow, who are traditional powerhouses in the EuroLeague Women will also try to start the season on a bright note when they go up against less-heralded opponents in their opener.

Turkish powerhouse Galatasaray, who will be bannered once again by several superstars like Sylvia Fowles and Alba Torrens, will go up against Croatian Club Novi Zagreb, who will be playing in their first season in the league after taking the spot of Gospic Croatia.

Russian club Sparta&K Moscow, on the other hand, will go up against debuting newcomers Tarsus from Turkey, who will be led veterans Amaya Valdemoro and DeLisha Milton-Jones along with Danielle Robinson, an American youngster who played with the San Antonio Silver Stars in the WNBA.
