EuroLeague Women 2013 Play-Offs: Wisla Can-Pack and CCC Polkowice Upset Higher-Ranked Opponents

Polish squads Wisla Can-Pack and CCC Polkowice created huge buzz in the first day of the EuroLeague Women 2013 Play-Offs after taking down their respective opponents on the road.

The 11-th ranked Wisla Can-Pack leaned on the heroics of American superstar Tina Charles to escape with a 57-54 upset win over the sixth-ranked Bourges Basket on Wednesday in France.

Charles scored three points in the final seconds of the match to lift her team to the win. Overall, the USA National Team standout ended up with 24 points, while Paulina Pawlak added 14 points to go with six rebounds and five assists for the Polish club, which bounced back from a measly eight-point performance in the first period.

“I'm so happy to win. Bourges are really a good team with hard defense but we found a way to play against them. Even if our first quarter was really bad, we knew we had to continue to play that way to win,” Pawlak said after the game.

Styliani Kaltsidou led Bourges Basket with 15 points, while Celine Dumerc and Emmeline Ndongue finished with 11 points apiece, with the latter adding 14 rebounds, but their efforts were wasted as they failed to protect their home-court advantage.

Meanwhile, 10th-ranked CCC Polkowice stunned the seventh-ranked Nadezhda, escaping with a pulsating 74-71 win in front of a disappointed home-town crowd in Orenburg, Russia.

Nnemkadi Ogwumike had a stellar performance as she finished with 20 points and eight rebounds. Belinda Snell and Laia Palau added 16 points each with the former adding eight rebounds and five assists, while Agnieszka Majewska chipped in 13 points and six rebounds for CCC Polkowice.

Both teams, who were the only two teams to score upsets on Wednesday, will have a chance to advance to the Final Eight when they host their respective opponents on Friday night in Poland.
