Host UMMC Ekaterinburg Dominates In Day One Of EuroLeague Women 2013 Final Eight

UMMC Ekaterinburg did not disappoint their hometown fans after posting a masterful win in the opening day of the 2013 EuroLeague Women Final Eight.

The host squad leaned on their defensive effort in the second half to cruise to an impressive 68-45 win over CCC Polkowice on Wednesday at the DIVS Sports Hall in Ekaterinburg, Russia.

Ekaterinburg led by as much as 17 points, but CCC Polkowice managed to pull within six points. However, UMMC Ekaterinburg stepped up on the defensive end of the floor, limiting their opponent to 12 points in the final 12 minutes of the match.

UMMC head coach Olaf Lange had nothing but praises for his squad’s defense, saying that limiting their opponent to just 45 points is impressive along with their production despite coming from a long layoff.

Lange said: “I think our defense was exceptional tonight. I have tremendous respect for CCC Polkowice as a team and I think to hold them to just 45 points on a night when we turned the ball over, was the foundation for the win. I am very happy with the result and especially because we didn't play in the play-offs.”

Candace Parker led the Russian club once again as she posted 17 points on 7-for-10 shooting to go along with 13 rebounds and four assists, while Sandrine Gruda finished with 15 points and five rebounds.

Ekaterinburg did a great job limiting the production of Nnemkadi Ogwumike, who only finished with 10 points on 4-for-13 shooting, while Belinda Snell finished with just eight points on 2-for-10 clip from the field.

On the other hand, the second-seeded Sparta&K MR Vidnoje also got ample support from the Russian crowd, who were also impressed with the 88-79 win posted by the Russian club against Famila Schio.

The two teams went toe-to-toe and were tied at 58 before the Russian club unleashed a 17-4 decisive run that was simply too much to absorb for Famila Schio. Seimone Augustus led Sparta&K with 18 points to go along with four rebounds and four assists.
