Australia’s Penny Taylor to Miss 2012 London Olympics

The gold medal hopes of the Australian Opals took a major blow after the team announced that Penny Taylor won’t play in the 2012 London Olympics.

Basketball Australia confirmed that Taylor, who has been a major factor in their success for the past decade, won’t make it to London after sustaining an ACL injury while playing for Turkish club Fenerbahce and will have to undergo surgery, which won’t make him fit for the Olympics.

Taylor, who is a shoe-in in the Opals final roster, was a key figure when Australia won the gold medal in the 2006 World Basketball Championship and when the team finished second to USA in the 2004 Athens and 2008 Beijing Olympics.

Australian Opals coach Carrie Graf admitted that Taylor’s loss will be a huge blow for them, although they still have Lauren Jackson in their fold.

“It's a devastating blow to our team and certainly to Penny herself as an athlete,” Graf said. “You know she was going to her third Olympic Games, she's a legitimate world superstar player and a huge part of her campaign, so devastating for Penny and certainly a big blow to our team.”

Taylor, who averaged 19 points per game for Fenerbahce in the recently concluded EuroLeague Women season, will also be missing the earlier part of the Phoenix Mercury’s campaign in the next WNBA season.
