Great Britain Trims Women Preliminary Squad to 18 Players

Great Britain’s preliminary roster has been trimmed down from 20 to 18 players after head coach Tom Maher made the first phase of cutting on Monday night.

Bonnie Samuelson, who played for the Stanford Cardinals in this year’s NCAA Tournament, was cut from the preliminary squad along with Sarah Naylor, who played for the Sheffield Hatters.

Maher said that cutting Samuelson and Naylor was a difficult decision for him, but he is confident about the current squad, which is a mixture of familiar faces and young talents, who will all start training on May 5 in Surrey.

“The 18 players invited to attend Surrey Sports Park in May are a fantastic mix with some of the more experienced players leading the way with the younger talent coming through too,” Maher said. “Everyone is coming to camp with great anticipation and ready to work hard to achieve our goals this year which is fantastic to see.”

Two familiar faces who made the cut are Sarah McKay and Georgia Jones, who could be making their return to the senior squad.

McKay, who was a key figure for Great Britain in 2008, will be making her return from injury after being forced to sit out in GB Women’s 2010 and 2011 international campaigns.

“I am beyond excited about being included for GB's preparation camp this year,” McKay said. “It is one step closer to the ultimate goal of the Olympics and this is what a lot of us have been working towards for over four years. I am now focused on making the final roster.”

Jones, who had an outstanding showing with the Futures team at the World University Games in China last year, was recalled to join the senior squad and is also a strong candidate for the final roster.

“We are very pleased to be able to announce the squad who has been formally invited to our preparation camp this summer,” British Basketball Performance Director Chris Spice said. “Selection this year has been more competitive than ever and it is great to see players like Sarah and Georgia returning to the team.”

After the Surrey Training Camp, the preliminary squad will be trimmed to 16 players. The final roster will be named on or before June 22, almost a month before the 2012 London Olympics.
