Australian Opals Name Training Camp Roster

The Australian Opals released their preliminary roster for the 2012 London Olympics on Friday, a month before the team opens their training camp.

Notably missing in the 20-player training camp roster is veteran international player Penny Taylor, who will be missing the team’s campaign in London after tearing her ACL while playing in the EuroLeague last season.

Without Taylor, veterans Lauren Jackson and Erin Phillips are expected to take on much-bigger roles along with Liz Cambage, who had an impressive rookie season in the WNBA after being selected by the Tulsa Shock as the second-overall pick last season.

Cambage, who made a huge impact for the Opals in the 2010 World Championship after averaging 13.6 points and 5.4 rebounds, is expected to be one of the focal points of their team’s offensive attack once again with Taylor out of the lineup.

Another player who could potentially fill in the gap left by Taylor is Bulleen Boomers star Rachel Jarry, who could be making her debut with the Opals this year.

Jarry, who played for Australia at the 2009 FIBA U19 World Championship, had a brilliant NBL season as she averaged 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game for the Boomers.

Jenna O’Hea and Kathleen MacLeod, who helped the Dandenong Rangers capture the WNBL title, will also be returning to play for the Opals.

O’Hea played in the 2010 World Championship, while Macleod will be making her return after missing the team’s international campaign since the 2007 FIBA Oceania championship.

The Opals will open their training camp on May 14 up to 18 at the Australian Institute of Sports.
