Asjha Jones Takes 12th Spot in USA Olympic Roster

Another former UConn Huskies standout will be flying to London this July after Asjha Jones claimed the 12th and final spot on USA’s Women’s basketball team for the 2012 Olympics.

Jones, who caught attention after earning the MVP honors in this year’s EuroLeague Women Final Eight, admitted that she was surprised when she got the final spot, which seemed to be bound for Baylor superstar Brittney Griner before the latter begged out.

“I kind of put the Olympics out of my head because I didn't think I was going to be on the team,” Jones said. “First I was surprised that Carol Callan, the team director, was even calling me. Then when I answered and she told me the news, I was very surprised, very shocked. I was really, really honored to be picked up.”

With Jones taking the final spot in the roster, half of the members of the USA Team are now former Huskies, who played under current USA and UConn head coach Geno Auriemma.

Jones will join fellow former Huskies Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, Maya Moore, Swin Cash, and Tina Charles on the USA team, who are expected to bag the gold medal in London this year.

“I would like to think that regardless of who the coach was, there's a pretty good chance that every one of those players would be on this team. They earned it,” said Auriemma when asked about her six former players in college. “All the accolades that these players have gotten, they didn't get those accolades because they played at UConn. They got those accolades because of what they've done in their pro careers, since they left Connecticut.”

The USA Team will get together for the first time from May 11-13 when they play against Asian powerhouse China and Japan.
