2012 London Olympics Basketball Groups Known

With less than three months left before the 2012 London Olympics, the ball has now started rolling after the draw held earlier this week in Brazil, which determined the groups for the women’s Olympic Basketball Tournament.

USA, who are the defending champions and are expected to be the heavy favorite heading into the tournament, was drawn in Group A along with China, Angola, and the three late qualifiers that will be determined next month.

The draw seems to be very favorable for the defending champions, but USA coach Geno Auriemma reiterated that their group could turn out tougher than the other one once the 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament ends.

“People might say we've got an easier draw than teams in the other bracket, but you have to remember that China is the Asian champion,” Auriemma said. “They have been climbing back up the world ranks and finished in the top four in Beijing, and Angola will be excited about playing in their first Olympics. Don't forget, we could end up with a very tough pool once the Olympic qualifying tournament plays out”

Meanwhile, Australia, who are aching to get back at their old rival USA, headline Group B, which also includes host Great Britain, Brazil, Russia, and two other qualifiers.

Five spots are still up for grabs, which will be slugged out by Argentina, Canada, Croatia, Czech Republic, France, Japan, Korea, Mali, Mozambique, New Zealand, Puerto Rico, and Turkey in the OQT that will run from June 25 to July 1 in Ankara, Turkey.
