Russia Releases Women’s Pool for 2012 London Olympics

Russia released their 20-player preliminary roster for the 2012 London Olympics in which their final 12 who will make it to London will be selected.

As expected, naturalized guard Becky Hammon was included to the pool selected by national coach Boris Sokolovsky, who is looking to steer the Russian squad to a podium finish in London Olympics.

Notably missing from the preliminary roster is veteran international player Svetlana Abrosimova, who, according to Sokolovsky, wasn’t included due to lack of playing time when she suited up for UMMC Ekaterinburg in the last EuroLeague Women season.

“The last two seasons, Svetlana has been getting very little playing time,” Sokolovsky said. “This is the main reason why the coaching staff made a difficult decision not to include Abrosimova in the number of actual candidates.”

Abrosimova expressed her disappointment on a post on her Twitter account which says: “Last couple of days was tough for me because of sudden changes in Russian Olympic roster. So it's good 2 come back to US & have time 2 regroup.”

Also missing is veteran star Maria Stepanova, who will mist the Olympics after sustaining an ACL injury during the EuroLeague Women Final Eight, which could be a huge blow to Russia’s bid in London.

The Russian women, who are ranked joint-second with Australia, were drawn in Group B along with the Opals, Brazil, host Great Britain, and two more qualifiers that will be known next month.
