Lauren Jackson to Carry Australian Flag in Olympic Opening Ceremony

Basketball superstar Lauren Jackson will have another milestone in her fruitful basketball career after being selected to carry the Australian flag in the opening ceremony of the 2012 London Olympics on Friday.

Jackson, who will be competing in her fourth Olympics, was selected based on her illustrious contributions to the Australian Opals aside from being the popular choice of Australians.

“There has been a lot of talk but this is amazing,” Jackson said. “It is a great honor. But there are a lot of people I have grown up with who I have played with and this is for you.”

Jackson, who led the Opals to silver-medal finishes in the past three Olympics, admitted that he was surprise with the announcement and she’s hoping that it will also boost their chances to finally dethrone USA.

“I can't think of anything that would ever top this,” Jackson said. “Obviously a gold medal would be awesome, but I feel like this is something that will never happen again. This moment makes me feel like nothing's impossible.”

Jackson, who is also a seven-time All Star in the WNBA, became the first women flag bearer of Australia since Jenny Donnet carried the flag in the 1992 Barcelona Olympics.
