Russia Quit Playing Games and Crush Belarus


Russia didn't wait to be upset by Belaarus and went for the game since they got out of the gates, led by a hyperactive Ilona Korstin. Using mostly the transition game and taking adventage of their bigs, Stepanova and Osipova.

Maria Stepanova sparkes a 10-0 run, in which Irina Osipova and Olga Arteshina scored four apiece. Anatoli Buyalski called time out with 10-5 in the score and a 5:13 remaining. After that Irina Osipova capped the 10-0 run, making it 12-5. Nataliya Trafimava cut the spurt with a three.

Russia continued being better and in the remaining minutes the run was 12-3 for Igor Grudin's side, finishing the quarter 24-15, with the russians keeping the perimeter game from Belarus in control.

Ilona Korstin and Irina Osipova scored 6 apiece for Russia, while in Belarus. Nataliya Trafimava also scored 6.

The second started with a three from Katsiaryna Snytsina for Belarus (24-18) followed by a trade of baskets where Belarus could take adventage of their improving on the deffensive end and their hot hand from outside to put within 1, 31-30, with 5:28 for the break, with a three from Katsiaryna Snytsina

But they weren't able to finish the comeback and Russia pulled its lead 35-30, making Buyalski call a timer aut with 3:07 remaining

The time out were useless and Belarus took a 6-1 run from Russia (4 for Korstin) to go to the lockers room trailing by the first double digit of the game, 41-31

Russia decided to wait no more and close the game after the break by scoring a 10-2 in the first 4:03 minutes of the third, with four from Oxana Rakhmatulina, to make it 51-33. Natalia Marchanka cut the run from the perimeter to make it, 51-36.

Russia kept racking up pints, and the spurt since then was 15-4 -with 9 from iolona Korstin, who scored 10 in the quarter, being Russia's leading scorer in the third. Grudin's team showed a very good transition game and played a good defense that overtook Belarus and that eventually closed the game for Russia, which entered in the fourth leading 68-40

In the final stanza with all done, Igor Grudin gave some good rest to his starters as Belarus wasn't as soffocated by the russians the could score more comfortably, trading baskets with Russia but with no chance to wint the game, that finished 87-73 for the Russians

Ilona Korstin led teh russian charge with 21 pts, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, joined by 15 pts and 11 rebounds from Maria Stepanova and 10 & 10 from Irina Osipova, and the 10 points scored by Irina Sokolovskaya

For Belarus Yelena Leuchanka had 18 pts, Katsiaryna Snytsina 14 and Natalia Trafimava 11.

Russia doubled Belarus in rebounding, 50 to 25.
