Latvia Steals Victory In The Last Seconds


With such good defenses the game was pretty even. Of course the scoring struggled. After 1:30 Latvia made a 6-0 run, sparked by four freebies from Liene Jansone and capped by Anete Jekabsone-Zogota. Both players scored 6 apiece from their team 18 in the quarter. Greece fought back. Pelagia Paoamichiail cut the run and Greece step by step closed the gap to finally level the score with 4 minutes remaining, 12-12, after a basket from Styliani Kaltsidou. Both teams struggled that four last minutes and was Anete Jekabsone-Zogota who closed the scoring making it 18-15 for Latvia

Gunta Basko hit the three in the beginning of the fourth, 21-15, and began the trading. After Styliani Kaltsidou made it 26-21 the Greek team stalled in the offense not finding open shots or missing them and Latvia scored 5 straight points -2 from Basko and a trey from Aija Putnina to make it 36-31 with 2:30 for the break leading to Konstantinos Missas' timeout. It didn't work and Latvia completed an 11-0 run with two more three pointers, the first from Jekabsone eith 2 minutes remaining and the second from Ieva Tare with 5 seconds remaining and send her team 37-21 ahead to the break. Greece defense avoid a deeper wound after not scoring in the last four minutes.

After the break Greece came out with a vengeance and lead in the quarter with Evanthia Maltsi and Styliani Kaltsidou- who scored 9 and 5 pts respectively, 14 from Greece 18 pts in the quarter. Latvia struggled and could only score 6 pts, but thanks to their previous lead they entered the last quarter leading 39-43.

In the fourth Greece kept on persecuting Latvia and it was a duel between Maltsi and Kaltsidou for Greece scoring 16 from Greece's19 and Anete Jekabsone Zogota who scored 13 from 15 in Latvia. With lots of hard work and patience the Greeks claw their way back, with an outstanding Maltsi who regained the lead for Greece with a three pointer with 2:50 remaining making it 57-55. Jekabsone-Zogota answered a minute after with another trey, 58-57 in the last possession Pelagia Papamichail received a foul but she split the free throws and send the game to overtime, 58-58.

Evanthia Maltsi put Greece ahead in the first play, 60-58, Dita Krumberga tied the score again and then Papamichail regained the lead for Greece with a threepoint play, 63-60, . Freethrows showed vital for Greece. Kaltsidou added one freebie to two previous from Dimitra Kalentzou to put Greece four ahead, 66-62, with 1:48 remaining. Dita Krumberga scored again from the perimeter to make it, 66-65. Gunta Basko replaced fouled out Ieva Tare after five minutes on bench.

And that was the difference.

With Anete Jekabsone Zogota over defended Perfumerías Avenida forward received an assist from Zane Tamane under the basket and converted to put Latvia into one point, 68-67. Greece missed its offense and the ball got into Basko's hands who drove to the basket, scoring and receiving the foul to give victory to Latvia with 25 seconds remaining. Greece missed its offense and Latvia finally won 70-68.

For Latvia Anete Jekabson-Zogota had 26 pts, and Gunta Basko 10.

For Greece Evanthia Maltsi scored 24 pts and Styliani Kaltsidou 21. Pelagia Papamichail added 13 pts and 11 boards.
