Greece And Italy Will Fight For A Spot At The Worlds

Slovakia stopped the Greeks after four minutes in the fourth, scoring a 6-0 run in the next two minutes to level the game and lead to Konstantinos Missas timeout, after which Greece made a 10-0 run in the next two minutes to put 32-22 ahead and lead to Pokey Chatman’s timeout with two minutes for the break, reaching the interval 32-35 after three freebies from Martina Gyurcsi.

Slovakia came out strong from the lockers with an 8-2 run in the first 5 minutes to get into one point, 34-33. Lucia Lascova capped the comeback with a three pointer with 3:20 remaining, putting Slovakia ahead 39-38 and started a 10-0 run in the next 1:30, capped by 7 straight points from Martina Gyurcsi putting Slovakia ahead 45-39 with 1:30 remaining, trading from then and entering the fourth ahead 47-42, making good stops on the greek offense.

In the last quarter Greece started with an 8-0 run in the first 3:20 to regain the lead, 50-47, beginning the trade again. Gyurcsi put Slovakia ahead for the last time in the game, 53-52, with 4:30 remaining. Four straight points from Kalentzou and Olga Chatzinikolau put Greece ahead, 56-53, for good with 3:40 remaining and the greek defense would take care of the rest. A three pointer from Evanthia Maltsi with 1:30 remaining iced the game making it 61-55. Greece finally won 64-59 closing th escore from the freethrow line.

Evanthia Maltsi had 23 pts for Greece and Dimitra Kalentzou 21.

Martina Gyurcsi had 23 pts and 12 boards for Slovakia.
