Minnesota Lynx Clinches Top Spot in Western Conference

The league-leading Minnesota Lynx added another one in their growing list of feats this season after clinching the top spot in the Western Conference for the first time in franchise history with an 83-72 win over the San Antonio Silver Stars on Monday.

Seimone Augustus was in her usual deadly form, scoring 20 points, but it was rookie sensation Maya Moore who stole the spotlight as she racked up 19 points and 12 rebounds, helping the Lynx improve to 23-6 and sweep their season series against the Silver Stars.

“Just her maturity, people expect a lot from her,” said Augustus on Moore. “She spoiled everyone with what she did in college, and she's come in and been everything that we've needed.”

Moore, this year’s first overall pick who racked up 150 victories and only four defeats in her collegiate career with the Connecticut Huskies, played big down the stretch, scoring eight points to end Minnesota’s drought in the final period that shut the door for San Antonio.

“It's just a blessing to be on this team,” said Moore, who also led the Huskies to two national titles. “All of us have a really special situation, so I'm just excited to play well because we still have a lot of work to do.”

Roneeka Hodges had 12 points, while Jia Perkins and Tully Bevilaqua added 10 points apiece for the Silver Stars, but it was not enough as they drop their record to 13-15 and are now only a game ahead of the Los Angeles Sparks in the race for the fourth and final playoff spot in the conference.
